📚 Comprehensive Formula Guide
Below are the mathematical formulas used in our 12 calculators. Understanding these will help you master percentage math manually.
1. Fraction to Percentage
Percentage = (Numerator ÷ Denominator) × 100
Example: 3/4 = (3 ÷ 4) × 100 = 0.75 × 100 = 75%
2. Percentage of a Percentage
Result = (Percent1 ÷ 100) × (Percent2 ÷ 100) × 100
Example: 20% of 50% = 0.20 × 0.50 = 0.10 = 10%
3. Find Original Price (Before Discount)
Original = Sale Price ÷ (1 - (Discount% ÷ 100))
Example: Paid $80 after 20% off.
$80 ÷ (1 - 0.20) = $80 ÷ 0.80 = $100
$80 ÷ (1 - 0.20) = $80 ÷ 0.80 = $100
4. Profit Margin
Margin % = ((Revenue - Cost) ÷ Revenue) × 100
Example: Cost $100, Sold for $150.
(50 ÷ 150) × 100 = 33.33% Margin
(50 ÷ 150) × 100 = 33.33% Margin
❓ Frequently Asked Questions (7)
1. How do I calculate a percentage of a number? ▼
Convert the percentage to a decimal (divide by 100) and multiply it by the number. Example: 25% of 200 = 0.25 × 200 = 50.
2. What is the difference between Margin and Markup? ▼
Markup is based on Cost (Cost + Markup = Price). Margin is based on Revenue (How much of the sale price is profit). A 50% Markup equals a 33.3% Margin.
3. How do I find the original price after a discount? ▼
Use Calculator #11. Divide the price you paid by the decimal form of what you paid. If you got 20% off, you paid 80% (0.80). So, Price / 0.80 = Original.
4. Can a percentage increase be higher than 100%? ▼
Yes! If a value doubles, it is a 100% increase. If it triples, it is a 200% increase. There is no upper limit to percentage increase.
5. What is a percentage point vs percentage? ▼
A percentage point is the simple arithmetic difference. If a rate goes from 4% to 6%, it rose by 2 percentage points, but it is a 50% percentage increase.
6. How do I turn a fraction into a percentage? ▼
Divide the top number (numerator) by the bottom number (denominator) and multiply the result by 100.
7. What is the formula for reverse tax calculation? ▼
Use Calculator #8. Formula: Total Amount / (1 + TaxRate). Example: $107 with 7% tax. $107 / 1.07 = $100.
